new orleans could happen to you

i've been mesmerized this entire week by the news coming out of the hurricane katrina. not so much the actual hurricane, but the horrible response and reaction by the government to it. this is worse than 9/11, this is worse than the tsunami, yet no one seemed to understand this until days after, if even then. there are going to be tens of thousands of dead people, far eclipsing the tragedies of 9/11 and all european terrorism put together. even worse is this was not a surprise like an earthquake or terrorism, people saw this hurricane coming days ahead of time. the rich and healthy people fled. the poor, elderly and sick could not. any politician that says the magnitude of the tragedy is a surprise and they couldn't have been prepared are flat out lying. FEMA predicted a hurricane hitting the new orleans area as one of the most probable events that could create chaos. it is five days after the even now it is still chaos, people are dying of thirst, disease and hunger. there should have been troops, national guard, ready with supplies to go in and help even BEFORE the hurricane hit. yet politicians sat on their hands, frozen. this is almost four years after 9/11. we are supposed to be better prepared, these same agencies are now run by the department of homeland security, the same people in charge of things after a terrorist attack. this just shows nothing has changed, if something bad happens, don't depend on the government. your tax dollars are going towards nothing. this isn't a tsunami on the other side of the world, this is fu@#$#@$ louisiana! hours away from anywhere in the US. bottled water and medicine and first aid should have been dropped from the air HOURS, not DAYS after the storm subsided! national guard troops should have been boating into the city HOURS, not DAYS after the storm subsided to stop the looting and criminals shooting at police and aid workers. of course there will be looting, you can't be surprised by that. new orleans is 70% poor, you have criminals on the street with nothing to live for and no police to stop them. you have drug addicts that haven't had a hit for days (drug dealers evacuated) that are going through withdrawal and will do anything for a hit. of course it will be dangerous, everyone knows that will happen. troops should have been there days ago. and its not like the US doesn't have troops or supplies, it was just a matter of politicians saying "do it", and they didn't. incompetence from the city level directly to the president sipping lemonade on his ranch. just now, five days after, after the country sees normal people dying live on television, dead bodies floating in the street, do people start to care. they kept saying help is coming, help is coming, it should have been there hours after the storm passed. this is days later, you could have had supplies on the other side of the world, not two states away, in that time. everyone is talking, but not acting.

FEMA declared the three most dangerous events that could happen in the US and cause the most destruction are: 1. terrorism in new york, 2. a hurricane in new orleans, 3. a major earthquake in LA. this was widely known, how could they not be prepared. people are dying because of incompetence. but don't worry, its just old people, sick people, and yes black people. too bad for them, politicians don't care about you, you are collateral damage, you were worth the risk of not preparing. so now the first two have happened, and things just got worse, not better, nothing was learned. oh guess what? gee, a major earthquake in LA... oh guess where i live? LA? wow... do you think we are any more prepared. hardly. do you think downtown or south LA would be any different than new orleans? we have just as many, if not more, poor minority people living in bad conditions. criminals and gang members on the street. when, not if, the major earthquake hits LA it will be even worse than new orleans, tens of thousands dying. will helicopters be able to drop off water at the staples center with thousands of people dying of thirst? again, its such a simple thing, but if it happened there, it can just as easily happen here. this is america, this isn't a third world country. land of the free, yet apparently home of apathetic and unprepared and frozen still. i'm watching the news and see politician and official keep giving speeches, not actually acting. it is madness. humanity, even in the most civil country in the world, is just one step away from Lord of the Flies. i know this labor day weekend i'm going out and buying enough water and food and supplies to keep myself alive for days after an earthquake, something we did back in the 1980s when i was in elementary school. yet even in california, people haven't had a major earthquake in a while and don't care. when it does happen, it will be chaos the country has never seen before, LA will become a warzone. the only thing missing from my supply kit would be a gun. because even if you prepare, good luck finding troops to protect you and keep your neighbor from taking your supplies from you by gunpoint. if if if... this isn't a story i made up, this is actually happening this very second only hours from my nice comfy house in california, inside the US, in new orleans. wake up people. don't let these pencil pushing government bureaucrats get away with this. we pay taxes for them to prepare for these things, they failed. although the computer simulated models that predicted this exact incident and aftermath perfectly for years weren't enough to get people to prepare, maybe seeing grandma and her granddaughter floating dead face-up down the street of an american city will. i hope for the sake of the rest of the country, and especially my home of los angeles, it does.

feed me

Wish you could keep up-to-date on news stories and updates to all your favorite websites in one easy to use interface? Now with most major websites offering syndicated feeds for updates to their site, the trick is to gather these all into one place. For my money (which isn't much because it's free) the best client I've found thus far is FeedReader, an open-source and easy to use client. Download, install, and start adding your favorite site feed urls, and in no time you are getting all the updates in one place, in a nice email/newsreader type format. It supports both RSS and ATOM formats.

Here are some good feeds out there you may want to add:

Lastly, if you have lots of blogs on Blogger to keep up-to-date with, Blogger supports feeds as well. It is always the URL of the blog with the suffix /atom.xml at the end. So for example, for this blog just add http://zerokitty.blogspot.com/atom.xml .

These are just a couple of my favorites from the top of my head, go through your own bookmarks and see which support site feeds, you'd be surprised. And it will save you time from clicking to all the sites yourself each day later on!

Bill Maher is god

Ok, so some of you may be actually awake and think you are "in tune" with the real issues of the day. These days its politics because of the upcoming election; as well as international issues because, well, the world is full of hate right now; as well as domestic and social issues because, well, your own neighbors and yourself are full of hate right now. How to sort through all of the issues of the day, and try to keep a sense of humor? Newspapers and standard news media outlets aren't funny. Radio has too many ignorant and partisan callers. A lot of people like Jon Stewart and his Daily Show on Comedy Central which takes a comical slant on "real" news organizations, but in my mind its child's play. For fresh takes and cutting edge humor, as well hard nosed looks at what's really going on, the real man is Bill Maher. Even if you don't agree 100% with him (I don't, but am getting closer each day), both your mind and funny bone will learn something. And its on HBO, so the censors can't kill him like they unjustly got him booted of his ABC show Politically Incorrect a couple of years ago. His new show is called Real Time with Bill Maher, on HBO Fridays. Don't get HBO? Check out alt.binaries.multimedia on usenet ;) Or click the above link, as he has transcripts of each episode. His books and DVD "Victory Begins at Home" will also give you a taste of his type of humor.

erase and rewind

what is about the worst thing in the world that could happen to an obsessive compulsive pack rat computer geek? hard drive crash? probably. i won't call her my sweetheart, because we were only together for less than a year. more like a one night stand and getting a regrettable disease. funny how this "new" drive crashed and my old reliable P3 server, which has been on 24/7 for almost 2 years serving this and that has no problems what so ever. i guess sometimes you just get a bad seed. but before yelling at the warranty people, i had to try to salvage my priceless data (which hadn't been backed up since december) so began late nights performing delicate surgery. ran out instantly and bought a new 250 gig drive, loaded windows, just enough to make it usable. then tried to read from the bad drive as a slave (since it wouldn't boot). seems like i got most data from 2 partitions (although some seems quite corrupted), although i couldn't read anything from the old c: partition. *sigh*, that's where my email is! windows could see the partition, but couldn't recognize the format. drat. so i got some advice to boot into linux and try to salvage. there is a cool linux distribution called Knoppix which you burn to 1 bootable CD, then without needing a hard drive, you can boot it up, instantly configures itself and is a fully functional linux operating system complete with a beautiful window manager, internet connectivity, and all the usual applications. i was quite impressed, insert disc and it just runs in ram. no configuration needed at all. however, even using this, i was unable to mount the bad partition giving bad data block errors in linux. crap. as a last resort i heard of a local company that does hard drive recovery. they said they just recover whole drives, not just a partition, and even then no guarantees. since it was a 200 gig drive, they said it would cost between $500 and $1900 depending on data and how difficult it was. well, you may be thinking, sure Josh it's not like you have a girlfriend to spend your money on... well true, but i'm not *that* crazy and obsessive over a hard drive. i said no thanks. so now i sit backing up what i did recover to dvdrw, will reformat my new drive, and return the bad one hopefully. so if you've sent any important email to me since december, you may want to resend :D and a good lesson to backup your data. be like a friend of mine who keeps all important data on 1 cd, and reformats his computer every few months. if you are a pack rat like me, this could be hard, but going through this made me realize there is more to life than crap on a hard drive. i think so anyway???

However, the week ended a little better. Last night I saw The Cardigans at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney. It was the first time seeing my favourite band from Sweden (only band from Sweden?) and highly recommend their new album that finally got released in the US. Amazing to see Nina sing live not more than five feet away, *swoon*. And then the stars must have been aligned right today, as during a staff volleyball game I somehow got myself involved in, I actually had a killer game. Being the awkward tall guy, things didn't start well after joining, but after weeks of practice things are coming together. Good thing, because one of the stars of the team, another tall spiker guy was out sick. Luckily I had some good plays, and one to end the game with a rather strong spike that almost took the head off some very cute girl on the opposing team ;P. The whole team was good today and we easily won our 3rd straight game. Although our competition will get stronger later on in the playoffs, it is good practice to defeat these teams in straight sets. And a good way to let off some steam of a tough week :D

hello goodbye

So not too long ago I was helping out my good friend at work investigate this chat/photosharing application called Hello. It is a chat program, but a really basic one with not too many features. However the cool thing about it is that you can trade pictures with other users very easily, and adds comments and point things out at what the other user is looking at. This is not what interested us though. It seemed there were hidden features to be found, such as if you typed certain words they would be auto-expanded in the chat or create animations in the photo window. She did an excellent job of explaining on her blog =), so I won't repeat. We eventually went a little further though. While investigating the code in a hex editor (geeks past this point only, thanks) I found the references to the animation pictures (and the keywords to create them). Looks like they are stored in a file in the "Hello\runtime" directory called "motio.psd". Hmmm, sounds like a Photoshop file to me. Alas, it was! And the reference names were to the names of the different layers on the photoshop image where each animation is stored. So as you can see on the image below, we messed around with this a bit and traded modified files. You can easily change the picture on each layer to however you want, save the file (using the latest photoshop version) and restart Hello to see new animations. Obviously it only works for the computer you are on, if you want your friends to see them too, you have to send them your modified file and have them copy it to the proper location. Unfortuantly to add new keywords would be difficult, have to wait for a new version with pluggable keywords (yeah right). We were able to modify the .exe file a bit through the hex editor though, and change keywords or the expanded versions a bit (if they were the exact same length) with... some good and some bad results :D

darwin, where are you?

okay, enough with all the melancholy posts lately. here is a fun one... sometimes i wonder how some people survive in the world...
